My seven-year-old, Mika, woke up in the middle of the night feeling sick. Mika came down to my room and woke me up to tell me she was sick. I grumpily told Mika to go ahead and lie down at the foot of my bed. Within half an hour, Mika was in my bathroom throwing up. Before she went into the bathroom, Mika had let the dogs out through the back door. When Mika came back into my room, I could still feel the cold air coming in from the open door. I told Mika to close the door and she told me the door was stuck open.
I was not about to have Mika wake up her dad to fix the door because he would be getting up early anyway to get ready for work. Mika and I laid in the bed watching the overnight news for a while since we were both wide awake. After about an hour, Mika asked if she could go out into the great room to play with her toys. I told Mika yes and tried to fall back to sleep. I finally fell back asleep when I heard my significant other, Donald, asking why the back door was open in a very loud voice. I heard Mika answer Donald and tried to go back to sleep. I was out of luck and wide awake.
Mika came into my room a little later and said, “I guess I should not eat so much candy before bed.” I laughed and was happy that Mika saw the cause and effect on her own. Mika is stubborn, like me, and also like me she needs to learn the hard way. I am better at taking people’s advice as I have aged, but as a child and young adult I knew everything. I might still need to remind Mika not to eat too much candy at once, but now she will probably stop when I tell her, instead of thinking she knows best.
My helper was here today, and we decided to match some of my unmatched networking clothes. In the past, I have purchased a pair of pants or long-sleeved blouse simply because I thought it was cool. Of course, when I get it home, the blouse or pants do not match any other clothes I own. I hang these orphan clothes in my laundry room where they multiply. The orphans have been multiplying even more so lately because my older daughter, Megan, occasionally steals clothes out of my closet to wear at her job at the movie theater.
Megan should not be stealing my networking clothes anymore because she gave notice at the movie theater just before the theater was closed. When the movie theaters finally reopen, Megan is not going back to work at her theater. I support Megan’s decision to quit her movie theater job because she was so unhappy working there for most of the past two years. Megan also has some of my stubbornness and did not like the corporate mindset she was supposed to adopt as a manager.
I talked Megan out of quitting already more than once. I would remind Megan she has a 401K that the company matches up to six percent of her income. Neither of her other jobs offer any retirement benefits. I would remind Megan she can purchase affordable medical insurance through the movie theater when she turns 26 and will not be covered by her dad’s insurance any longer. Neither of her other jobs offer any medical benefits at all. I would remind Megan of her dream of owning a home. This time, I think the stress of working 14-hour days, seven days a week between three jobs and the unhappiness was too much.
When Megan told me that she gave notice at the movie theater, I was disappointed that her dreams may take longer to achieve, but happy she had let go of the heavy weight she was dragging. On the plus side for me, I now have five more networking sets in my closet and a little more room in my laundry room.
My piece of advice to you is to let go when you need to. Donald does not like his job because it is hard on his aging body and he is miserable. Donald is only still working to be a good provider for our family, and Megan in particular. Donald decided he could hold out for a couple of years, but his job is eating his soul.
Until next time,
Susanne
