I have been a little sweatier this week. I am not surprised; I have a deep hole on my butt. I am sure there is extra pain from that hole and sweating is my body’s reaction to pain I do not feel. I have been very cold by around 4:00 p.m. every day and need to quit just about every evening task. All I want to do is go to bed right after my seven-year-old, Mika, gets home from school.
I may have inadvertently discovered a solution to my late afternoon deep-chill issue the other day. I lay the seat in my wheelchair back a few times a day to relieve pressure on my bootie. I had the second computer heater set up and was running them both. Around 2:00 p.m. I laid my chair back and discovered I was in the perfect cross heater spot. Instead of laying back for about ten minutes, I stayed down for half an hour basking in the heat.
That day I did not start shivering at three o’clock. I did not want to go to bed when Mika got home from school. Perhaps all I need is a long afternoon lay back break to help fight the super shivers. I will try this during the upcoming weeks to discover if I need an afternoon siesta. I am happy to give up half an hour at 2:00 p.m. if it means more hours of quality family time in the evening.
Oddly enough, my body seems to think it got steroids yesterday. Last night, I ate my supper super-fast. I did not eat much more than usual; I simply ate quicker as I do under the influence of steroids. Today, I have noticed I am eating more than a usual non-steroid Saturday. I have not noticed an extra appetite on past rest weekends. I think my brain told my body I was supposed to get steroids yesterday and my body believed it. I am happy to have an appetite without the side effects.
I am concerned I will lose some weight without my weekly dose of steroids and the cravings it produces. I did not eat a snack bag of Cheetos last night. Cheetos is my junk food of choice right now. Last year in April and May, it was gummy bears. In the fall it was strawberry Starbursts. What did we ever do before Starburst released strawberry only packs? Okay, I ate the lemon and orange Starbursts and gave the cherry ones away (I give away cherry gummy bears too).
My junk food obsessions are not excessive. When I was craving gummy bears, I ate a bag a week minus the cherry bears, which make up half the bag usually. When I was craving strawberry Starbursts, I ate two or three pieces a day. My Cheetos craving is a little bit stronger; I eat half a snack bag of Cheetos most days and sometimes a whole snack bag on Friday or Saturday when it is a steroid weekend.
I give in to my cravings because those three Starbursts each day may keep me from losing a pound that month. I am sure three or four snack bags each week of Cheetos have helped me gain the ten pounds I have gained in recent months. On Thursday, when I went to wound care, I discovered I had gained another pound in the past two weeks. Now I need to keep those ten pounds without the help of steroids.
My piece of advice to you is to do your best to stay healthy. My skin may love my chemotherapy break, but weight loss might be an unwanted side effect. There is nothing healthy about Starbursts, gummy bears, or Cheetos, other than they have a whole lot of calories in a few bites. When you eat less than 50 bites of food most days -- calories count.
Until next time,
Susanne
