Yesterday, my seven-year-old, Mika, and I took our last walk until next Saturday. Today through Friday are all forecast to be too cold for me to want to go outside, but Saturday will hopefully be back to at least 60-degree weather. I do not mind staying in for several days, I still have a few projects to finish. I do need to brave the cold Thursday, but I can handle being a little cold. I have been inside on cold days so long; I almost forget what it feels like to be cold (not really).
Mika and I walked over to our social distance play date friend’s house with Mika’s scooter, so the girls could roll around the sidewalks and street with them. The girls struggled to maintain social distance while riding their scooters, and when Mika fell, her friend rushed over to check on her. The counselor from Mika’s school lives somewhere in our neighborhood because she drives down the street past us sometimes when Mika and I walk to school. The counselor was walking down the street with a friend while the girls were riding their scooters, and they were excited to say hello to her.
Mika’s friend has a cat. It is a well-behaved, indoor-outdoor cat which acts more like a dog than a cat frequently. The cat follows Mika’s friend around the house, and yesterday I learned that the cat likes to chase thrown objects, just like many dogs. I recorded a few minutes of the girls throwing small rocks for the cat to chase. It was so funny. If the footage I recorded turns out well I will post a video on Mika’s YouTube channel, if not, I may try again another nice day.
Today is Easter and it is cold outside. The Easter Bunny is not leaving eggs outside for an egg hunt this year. The Easter Bunny left a few gifts for Mika around the house. Mika woke up to a small basket and balloon in her room and was extremely excited. Mika found a big chocolate bunny on the computer table once she finally came downstairs. Mika was distracted with the items in the basket and played with them upstairs for quite a while before she came downstairs to say good morning to me. I get it; I am just Mika’s mom, a basket with candy and puzzles is way more interesting than me.
A little while after Mika discovered, and started eating, her chocolate bunny, she found a new stuffed animal by her imagination backgrounds (doll houses). The stuffed animal Mika found was a crushed ball. To turn the ball into a recognizable animal, Mika needed to give it a bath and comb its hair. Once Mika washed the stuffed animal, we could tell it was a rabbit. A rabbit is a very appropriate gift from the Easter Bunny; however, one of Mika’s favorite stuffed animals is a sheep the Easter Bunny brought her a few years ago. Mika still sleeps with Sheepie nearly every night.
Mika later found a chocolate Cajun Easter Bunny in the refrigerator. A Cajun Easter Bunny is an alligator if you were wondering. We have an alligator fetish in my house. When kids ask me, what happened to my feet, I tell them an alligator got them. It is fun to watch children’s eyes get big when I tell them I used to be an alligator wrestler. The story is a complete fabrication, of course, and it is probably mean for me to fill children’s heads with nonsense, but it is so fun I cannot stop.
My piece of advice to you is to help perpetuate the illusions of childhood. Mika asked me if the Easter Bunny was real. When I asked Mika why she asked she replied, “You acted suspicious when I told you what the Easter Bunny gave me. After I verified Mika knew what suspicious meant, I told her I gave her the alligator. I told Mika truthfully, I was not responsible for any of the other gifts. Mika is now happily convinced there is an Easter Bunny and her mother did not accidentally shatter her beliefs. The real world is going to slap Mika hard in the face within the next few years. I want Mika to believe in magic as long as possible.
Until next time,
Susanne
